It’s that time of year. The kids are out of school and you’re ready for a vacation or a staycation. With some careful planning – and these tips – you can have some summer fun on a budget.
Save on Summer Travel
Our partners at GreenPath Financial Wellness, a trusted national nonprofit that offers guidance for managing debt, have provided the following tips for saving money on summer travel.
Set a realistic budget. Before you travel, consider all the expenses involved. This includes transportation, accommodations, meals, and activities. Allocate specific amounts to each category and put a portion of the budget toward unexpected expenses.
Travel during off-peak times. While summertime is a peak travel season, there are still ways to make your trip more cost effective. Avoid holiday weekends like the Fourth of July and consider travel dates during the week for better deals.
Be flexible with your destination. Explore a lesser-known locale for some summer fun without the premium rates.
Embrace free and low-cost activities. Take a walking tour, visit a public park or beach, or explore a hiking trail. Also, engage with locals for tips on affordable attractions and events in the area.
Plan your meals wisely. Just as you would meal plan at home, consider doing the same on your vacation. Opt for accommodations with a kitchen so you can prepare some of your own meals instead of eating out. Also, pick up some items at a local market and find a spot for a picnic.
Use travel rewards and discounts. Leverage travel rewards programs, credit card points, and loyalty programs to save on flights and activities. Look for coupons and promotions when booking your travel.
Save on Summer Activities
Central Florida is full of fun things to do, but that doesn’t mean your activities need to break the budget. While the kids are out of school, take advantage of free activities in and around Orlando.
Enjoy the attractions. On certain days this summer, Bok Tower Gardens is hosting Summer Fun Days, where you can enjoy complimentary admission. This can save you up to $17 per person. Additionally, through the Orange County Library System’s Local Wanderer program, you can experience many of Orlando’s museums and arts venues at no cost. All you need is a library card.
Spend time outdoors. From biking the West Orange Trail to walking around Lake Eola to enjoying the Lake Apopka Wildlife Drive, there’s no shortage of outdoor adventures here. Orlando’s many public parks are also perfect venues to savor a picnic packed from home.
Whether you choose to travel or take advantage of the many activities here in town, we hope you enjoy some summer savings.
